How low should you go? New cholesterol drug shows promise for hearts

It doesn’t take long, it seems, for doctors to hail new drugs as major life-saving advances, long before they are proven safe. Cholesterol-lowering drugs are no exception. The latest development is a new class known as PCSK9 inhibitors, still in the experimental stage, and already hailed as ‘revolutionary’ in 2013. They are being proposed as an alternative to statins, the world’s most prescribed drug, that have a whole host of serious side effects. These can include diabetes, kidney failure and liver damage and possibly even Parkinson’s.
