‘Fuel price increase to have devastating effect on agricultural sector’

CAPE TOWN - Agri Western Cape is warning the looming fuel price increase will have a devastating effect on the agricultural sector.
The price of petrol will go up by 88 cents a litre on Wednesday while the cost of diesel, which most farmers rely on, will increase by 95 cents a litre.
Farmers across the country are already under a lot of pressure as a result of the recent drought that has damaged crops and killed livestock.
Agri Western Cape CEO Carl Opperman said “For every one cent that the diesel price increases by, the total cost to farming in South Africa is R10 million. So if we look at the 95 cents increase that is coming through, we are looking at about R950 million additional to the current cost that we have to absorb in any production that we are doing.”
