Although withdrawal makes it easier to escape the less spectacular burdens of the Rome Statute, some obligations still flow as a result of UN membership. Al Bashir is a case in point as his persecution was set in motion by a Security council resolution binding on all members. We would have been under an obligation to arrest him, regardless of whether we had subscribed to the Rome Statute.
The exit is more symbolic than of practical value.
