This is a song written by Lucio Dalla (an Italian songwriter) about Caruso, one of best Italian tenors to ever live, not to mention Pavarotti's idol. Caruso had a very difficult life but managed to gain fame in the United States, which the song mentions (the nights in America). At one point in his life Caruso's wife left him, leaving him heartbroken, but only a few years before his death due to an illness he met another woman and fell deeply in love with her.
This song is about him singing to his newfound love on a terrace in Sorrento, thinking about his difficult life and how love makes even the encroaching death feel sweet.
