Cooking wine must be a product of Europe and the US. I've never come across something like that in South Africa. Maybe I just do not look in the right places.
When I need cheap wine to cook with, I generally use the Robertson Winery dry red or dry white box wine - it is anyway quite drinkable and on a par with mid-range wines in Europe. When I want to go slightly higher I'd use Tall Horse pinotage, shiraz, chardonnay (no wet-dog smell! - I suspect they age it in stainless steel) or sauvignon blanc. Next step up would be Laborie - I cannot imagine any dish exotic enough to justify splashing out more than that.

I was rather intrigued by the innovative approach to disposing of undrinkable wines!! Imagine, printing on the label that it is not for drinking!! I wonder whether it is possible to get past all the wine legislation that way!
