South Africa reported 17 new cases of Corona Virus infections for Saturday!
This must be massive news, in either of the following cases: 1. It is actually true, in which case South Africa has made a huge and unprecedented breakthrough in containing the virus, since every sane person on the planet would've expected the number of new cases to be somewhere around 390. Astonishing! Every headline in the world should be screaming this! 2. This is totally wrong. In which case something very bad happened to South Africa's ability to collect and report accurate figures. What could it possible be? Political interference? Collapsed infrastructure? People simply did not rock up for work? It is still substantial news and every headline, at least in South Africa, should be screaming this.

Doctors went home!

Something about the daily release of the stats reminds me of the knitting women of the guillotine, who sat next to the guillotine and counted the heads falling into the baskets (apparently the counting part has been somewhat exaggerated by Dickens).

Yes, I think that what in fact happened is that there was a slight over-reporting over time (due maybe to some false positives) which has been retrospectively corrected. So that the 17 new cases for Saturday is basically just the difference between the total number of cases reported for Friday and the corrected total number for Saturday. It is not the actual number of new cases. Which, as I said, should be somewhere in the region of 390.
