Vavi said they're not redistributing the wealth of the land as prescribed by the Freedom Charter while addressing a gathering of mining affected communities on Sunday.
26 June 2016 marks 61 years since the launch of the Freedom Charter and Zwelinzima Vavi believes some of its founding principles haven't been fulfilled, especially the redistribution of wealth.
Vavi said "Our leadership have turned to be security guards of white monopoly capital."
Reflecting on the chaotic and deadly ANC nomination process ahead of the local government election, Vavi said the party has been turned into a self-serving organisation.
He exhorted, "They have turned a movement of Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela, to be a shameful shadow of its former self. What a shame that they are using the legacy of Chris Hani, of Steve Biko, of Solomon Mahlangu to kill one another not for liberation of our people. But only for the sole purpose of ensuring that they can share the bones that are falling from the Anglo-American table."
He also echoed the sentiments of those who fear that the recent violence could be redirected towards opposition parties.
In response, ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa dismissed Vavi as politically irrelevant.
He said the ANC-led government was committed to radical economic transformation, even though the redistribution of wealth has not met the people’s expectations.
