Bill proposes: No drinking until 21NATIONAL NEWS - If the amendments to the National Liquor Bill are approved by Parliament, the legal age to consume alcohol in South Africa will be increased from 18 to 21, which effectively means that next years' matrics will be toasting their successes with grape juice. Rob Davies, Minister of Trade and Industry, told a media briefing in Parliament on Monday 3 October that his department has issued the National Liquor Amendment Bill which is open for public comment for the next 30 days. ...

So this will reduce alcoholism etc?
Like the Prohibition did?
Opening up another occupation (supplying young people illegally with liquor).
A minor at 18 is a major but a second-class citizen until 21.
Can the ANC really afford to lose more young voters? I hope they do.

Minister Davies, tear up the draft Liquor Bill now Michael Fridjhon 27 Oct 2016 11:04 (South Africa) The draft Liquor Bill infringes on the rights of the provinces, effectively expropriates property rights and aims to impose vicarious responsibility on producers for the abuse of their products by consumers. All sorts of statistics are bandied about as the DA join the ANC bandwagon- see report, below. The apartheid government kept black drinking *under control* by not selling (or restricting) alcohol to blacks. That seems a good starting point, does it not? Outlaw all sales and at the same time get rid of Distell and SAB in its new guise. Force PIC not to invest state funds in these companies, shut down the trade in sorghum beer. See problem solved. If we are too ignorant about euthanasia, surely drinking alcohol and sugary drinks should be banned outright. As a matter of interest, the DA massage stats of alcohol abuse by taking abstainers out of the equation. Apart from wondering how they determine that, I also wonder whether the stats for other countries are on the same level. We have the statement that existing legislation and law enforcement are not good enough. My question is, but who enacted the Western Cape Liquor Act and who is enforcing that? Over the years the liquor industry has had to bear the brunt of all the social experiments, legislation, excise duty, the demonisation of wine farmers, the size and nature of liquor containers, swart varkies, dop system, liquor licence restrictions && and DESPITE all that it seems that the problem is now worse than EVER? Why, should one ask was it not so bad under the regime - often accused of being in bed with the wine industry? It seems to me there is a lesson here. So once again, individual responsibility goes for a loop and BIG BROTHER tells us what to do. Next they will legalise dagga and I wonder how that is going to solve the "problem"?
