I just wanted to encrypt a few files. Not the whole disk – which can be done when installing the Ubuntu OS. Some protection is available employing user file/folder privileges. I wanted a bit more than that. Trying a few programs, I settled for VeraCryptIt is available for Mac and Windows as well. It is based on the TrueCrypt project which was discontinued and which has security issues. It is claimed that the security issues have been fixed in VeraCrypt. Although the program has many features (including hidden files), my demands are modest and I just wanted to get it up and running as soon as possible. The instructions at that level are easy and clear. The Veracrypt files are mounted as a separate disk, when opened. From that point on they are treated like any other files and can be manipulated and changed effortlessly as with any other file on the system. The encryption even works without further ado on cloud services like Dropbox. In other words a file can be encrypted and uploaded to Dropbox (for example). This may be important for people who do not trust the security provided by cloud services. The program has a good rating as well – I counted a number of 4 stars and even a 5 star rating
