I don't know where they are coming from. The Karoo is a very, very large place. It's inconceivable that any human activity can cause anything noticeable there in the grand scheme of things. (People crap in the sea all the time - which is immediately sterilised through the enormous concentration of salt and provides nutrients to marine life).

The resistance to fracking is well organised. Some of these people include academics and others who do not even live in the area. It is also driven by landowners who bought land with a view to wildlife farming and ecotourism. Fracking does not suit their agenda.
