A small nuclear reactor was involved in the failed missile test last week in Russia that ended in an explosion that killed five scientists, Bloomberg News reported Monday.
The institute they worked for is developing small-scale power sources that use “radioactive materials, including fissile and radioisotope materials” for the Defense Ministry and civilian uses, Vyacheslav Soloviev, scientific director of the institute, said on local TV, according to the news outlet.
Radiation levels were up to 16 times the norm in a nearby town, the national weather service said Tuesday August 13th, after an explosion at a Russian missile testing site on Thursday. Russian authorities recommended residents leave area.
Following Thursday's explosion, Russian authorities recommended residents of Nyonoksa leave their village while work is carried out nearby, Interfax news agency cited local officials said Tuesday.
