It seems simple: I want to download links and view them before deciding whether I want to save them. It has happened before that when using a new browser, particularly when wanting to view email attachment, the browser refuses access to the the default viewer unless the link content is downloaded first. The end result (for me) is that I end up with files on my system I have no desire of retaining. Of course they can be removed but that is a fag. The solution (partly) is simple. On the Brave Browser open Settings/Additional Settings/Downloads and go to Location, Ask where to save each file before downloading and set the switch to off . This posts a link to the bottom of the browser which, when clicked on, opens the link in the default viewer without saving it first. To open the original link without the bother on having to click on it a second time requires an additional solution, which I will write and post later. Below is a screenshot of the Settings window with the relevant items circled.

All of a sudden (?) the problem seems solved: Once a download is clicked on, it opens in a reader without the need for any further software. There has been a number of updates to both Ubuntu 20.04 and Brave Browser - perhaps that is the reason.
