Every time I look at this website I note the year 1683 and tell myself that this is shortly after Van Riebeeck landed at the Cape. While the Dutch were conquering Africa and beyond, Europe itself was threatened. Funny that in our history lessons at school this was never mentioned or not mentioned in a meaningful manner.

I had history as a compulsory subject up to Standard 8. I do faintly recall reading about Karel Martel and his battles.
Strange how formal school managed to turn almost everything I found fascinating afterwards into something I found unbearably tedious at the time. And whereas what passes for education these days is a catastrophe, I'm not to fond of what preceded it either.
