The prophets of doom now have black faces. ‘Disastrous’ doom looms over agriculture industryAfasa’s Aggrey Mahanjana says farmers are caving in under the pressures of the drought & rising fuel prices. Siyabonga Sesant | about 15 hours ago CAPE TOWN - The African Farmers’ Association of South Africa (Afasa) says the agriculture industry is heading for what it’s called a “disaster”. The association has warned chicken, pork and red meat prices will more than double in the coming months, due to the rocketing price of maize. It says the effects of the drought, exacerbated by the increases in the price fuel and electricity are to blame. The Afasa’s Aggrey Mahanjana has predicted doom for the agriculture industry. He says maize, which is used to feed livestock, used to cost between R1,800 and R2,000 a tonne. Mahanjana says that price has ballooned to around R3,000 a tonne and could further balloon to R5,500. “It’s going to be a disaster in our industry. A disaster. A lot of farmers will have no option but to pack their bags and look for jobs.” Mahanjana says the looming winter months will mean farmers will have to dig even deeper to make ends meet.
