From what I understand about some reservations, especially those in the southwest, they have a sad life Personally, I cannot speak for them. There are many of us living among the white population and no one thinks anything about their ancestry. Some of us have darker complexions than the reservation Indians, but then I have seen people on the reservations that were just as white as myself.
On the other hand, many of my cousins are as dark as any Native Americans/First Nation peoples, but they live among whites in the area and are treated just like any other local citizen.
One of my dark cousins, living in Dyersburg, TN is a detective on the police force and has been nominated to replace the exiting chief. His older brother was, until his death, a highly respected member of the city council and was owner of an automotive sales company.
Strangely, though I had dark skinned relatives, all of my siblings were light and had blonde hair and blue eyes. My mom and I had dark hair.
You do know, I am sure, that the Mexicans now swarming into the US are actually Native Americans. That is how they came by their dark skin. Matter of fact, many are descendants of the Apache, Navajo, and other tribes that were chased to Mexico by European immigrants and there, they assumed spanish names.
We have an area to the south here in Louisiana where everyone claims to be Spanish because they have spanish names - Ebarb, Sepulvado, Meschell, others - , but are actually Apache, Choctaw, and Caddo natives, Here, they are considered to be white and show on the census as such.
While working with the USAF and Boeing, I had many co-workers that were Native American, of various tribes from the plains and west. Many were born and reared on reservations, but got jobs among off-reservation businesses and saw that the rest of the country had better living conditions. They left the reservation willingly and said that there was no way they would ever go back.
There are those reservation indians, such as Snoman talks about, that are no better than the blacks, slackers, leeches, and drunks. There are also many Native Americans that are some of the best people and citizens that you would ever hope to meet!
I am sure you have seen some of my posts regarding the first European explorer in the US, on Hernando DeSoto. He explored the southeastern US less than 50 years after Columbus arrived and well before any European settlers came ashore. He recorded in his journal that when he first met the Cherokee, he found among them many people with blonde hair and blue eyes, The average stature of Cherokee men was 6 feet.
There were also black people with tight curly hair! Seems there were visitors from the east, long before Columbus.
Go west of the Mississippi River and the average native man was around 66 inches, which relates to their Asian ancestry.
(Thanks, GG)
