As I understand it, Assange is an Australian citizen. I fail to see in which ways US laws are applicable to him, or how the UK can legally extradite him to the US. I'd guess that the only ethical way for the UK to handle it is to extradite him to Australia. It will then be for Australia to decide which crimes he committed, if any.

My off -the- cuff response would be that it is alleged that he is accused of transgressing US laws. The US would have an interest in getting hold of him via extradition as it is unlikely that he could be tried for those offences in any country other than the US. There is something for the view that Australia should decide whether to extradite him. To come to a considered opinion would involve looking at the extradition laws and treaties of all four countries concerned.
