SOUTH Africa is embarking on a programme to ensure the farming industry complies with the country’s employment laws.
Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant, will as part of the exercise address an Imbizo of farm workers in the area of Southern Cape at George on Saturday.
The theme under which this Imbizo will be conducted is, “Inspection and enforcement services”.
Sithembele Tshwete, Media Liaison Officer, Ministry of Labour said the farm workers Imbizo was conducted against the backdrop of an inspection exercise conducted in March.
She said the objective of this exercise was to ensure that employers in the farming sector comply with employment laws.
It is also to determine whether employees get paid the legislated minimum wages, compliance with Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Disease Act (COIDA) and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
