If you wonder why so many illegal immigrants are prepared to risk life and limb to get into South Africa, before you read the harrowing story below, pause a while on our graph. It shows the World Bank’s estimated GDP per capita of the countries where most of the illegals come from. This measure of how much wealth is generated for each person in that country shows rather obviously why South Africa is such a magnet for migration from the north. On average, South Africans enjoy a standard of living 25 times above those of Malawians and Somalians; more that 10 times Ethiopians and Mozambicans; and seven times better than Zimbabwe. Contrast that against the USA’s GDP per capita which is a modest five times above Mexico’s – and even with all those resources the Yanks cannot stop illegals from their southern neighbours. We suggest delusional Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba opens his eyes to reality – and realises that instead of meddling with tourism, there is a rather obvious area where he should actually be focusing his attention. – Alec Hogg
