I have only ever worked with two journalists educated at Oxford University. The first, Howard Preece, was my boss at the Rand Daily Mail. His talents were so superior, the only time he didn’t win the annual Sanlam’s financial reporter of the year award was when he forgot to enter. I never did discover why Howard, one-time President of the Oxford Union, decided to come to South Africa. Whatever the reason, his guidance and example made a huge impact on many of us in what was then a fledgling profession. The other is James Myburgh, who earned his Doctorate at Oxford’s prestigious seat of learning. Meeting James back in 2007 was one of the better days of my life. He and the late Stanley Uys were producing a website site called Everfasternews.co.za to showcase their talents to a depressingly small audience. We became business partners and as a result the next three years gave me a front row seat as James built the site we renamed Politicsweb.co.za. While I was on my semi-sabbatical from 2010, a different strategy was adopted at Moneyweb and James was duly cut loose. To his eternal credit, he soldiered on alone and today his website is the go-to destination for all things political about South Africa.
