There is something odious about baboons and monkeys as invective which does not apply to the rest of the animal kingdom.
Would it for example be racist to call a group of white people any of the following:
Lions Jackals Pigs Polecats Donkeys Asses Mice Lice Cockroaches Wolves Elphants Sheep Savages Vermin Hyaenas Vultures Tigers Moles
There must be many more.
Now does the situation change if these terms are used in relation to black people?
One can even add words like pr!cks, @rsholes, motherf#2%s, settlers and so on.
But god forbid calling a (black) person a monkey, chimp or baboon...
