How I escaped load-shedding for R50,000 If you are prepared to settle for a manual change-over you could probably reduce the DB costs (R7,986.00) substantially. I bought a changeover switch for R450. What is enough to make one's blood boil is the R6,517.65 VAT. For their incompetence in sorting out Eskom the government gets paid. It is possible to switch to a gas powered refrigerator - about the biggest power guzzler here. I have no idea of the costs involved in that. The worst part of load-shedding in hot areas is the lack of an aircon. Their power use is actually not that much (perhaps 2 kw), but it is an additional "non-essential" item making demands on your inverter. A swimming pool can be considered, but the pump needs electricity. Houses should again be designed for protection against heat (like the old farm houses with their thick clay wall, high ceilings, shutters, grass roofs). Pink insulation on the ceiling would help in modern houses as well as a reflective roof colour Trees around the house are also a help.
