That first movement must be a massive ego trip for the principal trumpet. Wish I had the opportunity to work through that part, when I still did that kind of thing.
At the time I did not know of it - 40 years ago Mahler was not that well-known, and there was no internet. If you did not hear something somewhere by coincidence, you never became aware of it. I did know his symphonies I, II and 8, I knew the Adagietto in this symphony, and Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. But, in general, if you wanted to hear music you never heard before, you were basically obliged to buy a record.
(I fell totally in love with the girl on the cello - some shots of her at 53:14 and 55:48. I think the bloke with the camera fancied her too).
