SENTINEL PROJECTS
Some truly fascinating stories, there.
For me at any rate, because I can personally identify with more of those units than almost anybody in South Africa, from my experiences as a member of one of the 3 leading school cadet bands in South Africa, playing in a brass band for 2 years during national service, and later on working for Armscor. I've stayed in, slept and ate in and with all of the following outfits, which I thinks is perhaps rather unique:
6 Medical Battalion Group Voortrekkerhoogte
3 South African Infantry Battalion Potchefstroom
4 South African Infantry Battalion Middelburg
Signal School Heidelberg
7 South African Infantry Battalion Burke's Luck
Johannesburg Light Horse Regiment Johannesburg
21 Battalion LENZ
Catering School Pretoria (Elandsfontein)
2 Armoured Car Regiment Zeerust
1 Parachute Battalion Bloemfontein (Tempe)
Johannesburg East Commando Johannesburg (Doornkop)
Johannesburg West Commando Johannesburg (Fordsburg)
Soutpansberg Commando Messina
Naval Base Simon's Town
State Presidents Guard SA Army College, Voortrekkerhoogte
Technical Services Training Centre Voortrekkerhoogte
10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment Cape Town (Youngsfield)
South African Army Headquarters Cape Town (Castle of Good Hope) (I actually STAYED in the Castle for about 6 weeks. How cool is that!?)
(1. Some of those units moved elsewhere (e.g. 7SAI) or changed their names, in the meantime, or ceased to exist altogether).
(2. I knew that the various SAI units were fighting outfits, but I severely underestimated the extent of their engagement during the eighties).
