I think that too much is being made of populism, or too much is being ascribed to populism. I think political analysts are still unable to make sense of the changing mood in the European world, because they now have a word which they ascribe all kinds of things to, and the entire concept is substantially flawed.
People are angry: Because of creeping totalitarianism. Crony capitalism (i.e. State Capture). Because a political class has come into existence which pays scant regard to the concerns of the people they are supposed to represent. Because that political class still very visibly appears to believe that it can manipulate the weltanschauung of the general population - something people can easily recognize to their infinite resentment. Because this political class labours under a totally unsubstantiated belief in their intellectual and cultural superiority. Because the language people can use to voice their discontent has been criminalised and outlawed.
Basically, people are demanding of politicians to be the public servants they are supposed to be. Preferably at a salary commensurate with their status as servants, which isn't much.
All these populism narratives are basically bullshit.
